It is often said that one cannot “have one’s cake and eat it too.”
We say, “Forget the cake. It’s rarely worth the calories. But do tell me what you have on tap behind the bar.”
Drink Your Carbs is the product of over five years of experimentation by two people who wanted to build a diet to fit their lifestyle rather than change their lifestyle to fit a diet designed by some prohibitionist control freak. Drink Your Carbs is about making better food choices. By limiting our starches and changing the kinds of fats and carbohydrates we eat, we can lose weight while leaving plenty of room in our diets for the alcohol we have no desire to do without.
Drink Your Carbs is The Drinker’s Diet.
We readily admit that meeting your weight-loss goals using Drink Your Carb is more difficult than achieving weight loss on other major diets. Other diets forbid alcohol; we embrace it. We like the taste of alcohol. We like the social aspects of sharing wine or beer with friends. We like the relaxation it creates at the end of a long day. This is the primary reason we developed Drink Your Carbs. However, if we want to keep drinking, we all must come to terms with the fact that alcohol adds calories to our diets that will have to be burned off and/or offset if we also want to lose weight.
Half a bottle of wine at dinner adds approximately 275 calories to your day. Fortunately, in the American diet there are plenty of places where 275 calories can be easily eliminated without any perceptible loss in the quantity of food eaten or in daily nutrition. There is no question that over the past 50 years, heavily processed, high-calorie, low-nutrition foods have come to dominate the American diet. It is often said that a true American cuisine is hard to define; we think that the single most defining attribute is too many empty calories. The second most defining characteristic is probably the color beige.
