Austerity Mode eliminates three categories of foods that are Limited under the Basic Food List. Austerity Mode moves Sweet Protein, Alternative Flours and Limited Grains to Avoid. All other categories remain the same. By moving these three categories, Austerity Mode eliminates nearly all the remaining sugars and starches left in Basic Drink Your Carbs.
Austerity Mode takes far more discipline and willpower to maintain than is first evident. It somehow feels more restrictive even though the foods you will be eating are not remarkably different from the Basic Food List. In defense of Austerity Mode, everyone we know who has used it has seen dramatic results. Austerity Mode is a perfect example of how small dietary changes can make a huge difference.
AVOID
Sweetened Protein
We understand that these meats often contain very little sugar or other sweeteners. Nonetheless, they are to be avoided in Austerity Mode.
Examples of sweetened meats include:
Beef/Buffalo Jerky
Deli Meats (Sweetened)
Ham
Maple, Honey etc. Bacon
Pepperoni
Grains
There is no question that grains add far more calories to a meal than would be added by any side dish of vegetables. While we believe that limited quantities of these complex grains should be part of a healthy diet, avoid even these complex grains in Austerity Mode.
Brown Rice, Wild Rice, White Rice, Forbidden Rice, etc.
Buckwheat
Quinoa
Alternative Flours
Examples of alternative flours include:
Acorn Flour
Almond Flour
Bean Flours
Buckwheat Flour
